Separation science is the science of separating, detecting and identifying individual components of complex mixtures using a variety of instrumental techniques. A wide range of instrumentation is used for this purpose, and includes (but is not limited to):
- Chromatography: gas chromatography (GC), liquid chromatography (LC), supercritical-fluid chromatography (SFC) etc.
- Mass spectrometry (MS): in combination with chromatographic methods or as stand-alone technique
- Other methods including capillary electrophoresis (CE), solid-phase extraction (SPE), ion-mobility etc.
There are numerous organisations and societies across the UK which promote and provide training in these techniques. Some of these organisations, as well as a directory of online resources on various topics in separations science are provided here. To add your organisation or website to those listed here, please get in touch.
The SSG works with the following organisations to promote separation science in the UK:
The UK Chromatographic Society
The British Mass Spectrometry Society
The London Biological Mass Spectrometry Discussion Group
The RSC Environmental Chemistry Group
The RSC Food Group
The RSC Water Science Forum
